Review: SingStar Motown

“I heard it through the grapevine…”

Format: PS3 (version played), PS2 Dev: London Studio Pub: Sony

For lovers of soul and classic sultry numbers, SingStar has never really catered for your tastes, aside from giving you the odd chance to warble along to Whitney or bellow to Barry White. Well, that’s now all set to change.

In order to celebrate 50 years of Motown, SingStar Motown will have true music lovers grooving and bopping along as they sing their way through a great collection of classic tracks from legendary artists. If belting out Busted or popping along to Pink isn’t really for you then now you’ve got an alternative to choose. I won’t list the full tracklist as I want you to have some lyrical surprises.

So, if you’ve always wanted to groove with Marvin Gaye, ‘Get Ready’ with The Temptations, or croon along with The Commodores, then this really is a great one to add to your SingStar collection or even begin one. I assure you as soon as you sing/slur (depending on how intoxicated you are) the opening bar to The Jackson 5’s ‘I Want You Back’ there really is no return.

Other bands and artists that feature on the game include The Supremes, Smokey Robinson and Stevie Wonder, plus many more. There are twenty-five tracks on the game and with the bonus of a PS3 you also have the option to download more from a huge online catalogue. On PS3, the game is much like its predecessors and allows for much smoother and more fluent gameplay. If you’re hooked up to the net then, of course, there are even more tracks, including some exclusives, to download.

SingStar Motown still incorporates all of the standard features: team play, duets, solos (yes, I know that there are some of you who like to belt out a tune or two when all your housemates are out). It also allows you to connect a recording device via the USB ports. So, after watching the songs actual video, you then get the chance to watch your own in the playback after you’ve tried to beat your friend’s hi-score.

For anyone who likes their songs to have more melody and rhythm this is the SingStar release for you. If you have exhausted the previous nine, ten or eleven (I’ve lost count by now) then go and grab this one. It’s perfect for pre-drinks before hitting the R&B room in Oceana or having a soulful Saturday night out (or in).
