GameCity 4: thatgamecompany graced Nottingham with an evening performance of their beautiful interactive expression in the Exchange Arcade
In another unique event at GameCity Squared, Robin Hunicke of thatgamecompany performed a live playthrough of Flower – a touching game that gives players the chance to interactive with nature in ways not seen before in video games.
Usually more at home with boutique openings than displays of digital expression, the event took place inside the vaulted space of Nottingham’s Exchange Arcade.
The game was projected onto four large sheets that were suspended above the central passageway. The assembled crowd of festival goers and commuters watched contently as Hunicke played the game from start to finish.
When it was over she took the time to answer questions from audience – some of whom were fans and some who’d just experienced it for the first time.
Speaking about thatgamecompany’s creations, Hunicke said, “we don’t try to say whether they’re games or not games. What we want is to create new feelings in our players. That’s the most important thing for us.”
