GameCity 4: Jagex chatted about their hit free-to-play MMORPG
During the week-long GameCity festival, Christoph Vietzke, Head of RuneScape at Jagex, described some of the things that make their massively multiplayer online role-playing game so popular.
Launched in 2001, RuneScape has slowly but surely captured a wide audience, in part thanks to its strong word-of-month endorsements by web users. A browser-based free-to-play game, RuneScape offer users the opportunity to explore a fantasy world, complete with human players and computer-controlled characters.
Concept art and screenshots from the game were shown, and Vietzke discussed the mechanics behind the game as well as the importance of listening to its community.
Vietzke believes what separates RuneScape from other MMOs, such as World of Warcraft, is that “it doesn’t tell you what to do, you tell the game what to do.”
Jagex was also voted ‘UK Developer of the Year 2009’ at the Golden Joystick Awards.
