Former Trent TV Officer wins prestigious student media award
It was a huge week for Trent Media last week. Fly FM scooped a well deserved hat trick at the Student Radio Awards and by all accounts had a great time celebrating, judging by the photos strewn across Facebook.
They weren’t the only victors though, ex-Trent TV Officer, Steph Oliver, won ‘Broadcast Journalist of the Year’ at the Guardian Student Media Awards last week too.
Wednesday 25, November saw the 31st Guardian Student Media Awards at a good old knees-up of a ceremony at the Proud Galleries, London, presented by none other than ex-Radio 1 host, Colin Murray, who now resides on Radio 5’s airwaves.
The Broadcast Journalist of the Year award recognises talent and ability. Last year it was also won by a former Trent student, Danielle Couchman, who now lives and works in Hastings for Arrow FM as a newsreader London as the continuity writer and announcer for the UKTV channel Really, (Sky 248, Virgin 267). She’s also picking up voice over work for large online, and radio campaigns, such as EA Games and Florence and the Machine.
The submission can be based on work through the union or your course, and Steph won for her feature as part of her degree. Rob Kirk, Sky TV’s editorial development manager, called it “compelling, hard hitting and accurate journalism.” Steph’s feature was a piece of investigative journalism which involved visiting prisons and speaking to men who had been abused by their wives.
As a prize, Steph received a lovely engraved award, £650 and two work placements, one at The Guardian and one for a whooping six weeks at Sky TV.
Steph’s work for Trent Media and Trent TV last year was dedicated, professional and passionate. She introduced a lot of new productions to the existing ones, co-hosted Trent’s very own NTSU Awards (in her unique Geordie style) and did a fabulous job of continuing the great work that Trent TV began back in 2006.
Congratulations Steph, a very well deserved victory for all the hours spent filming, editing, presenting and organising. Good luck in the future.
