Review: Astro Boy

Director: David Bowers
Starring: Freddie Highmore, Donald Sutherland, Nicolas Cage
Released: 05/02/2010
Rated: PG

When scientist Dr. Tenma (Cage) loses his son in a scientific-experiment-gone-wrong, he sets about building a robot replica using the very force that destroyed him. However, he does not feel the paternal feelings he did for his real son and so turns his back on his robot replica. Abandoned and with nowhere to go, Astro Boy (Highmore) leaves the futuristic floating Metro City and goes to The Surface where he meets and befriends other neglected children. It is during this journey that he learns how to use his super robot powers but the fun does not last as President Stone (Sutherland) wants to harness the powers Astro Boy has in order to rule Metro City…

To put it simply this is one purely for the kids, although adults may like some of the humour. Although the film fails to capture any father-son emotion it stands as an enjoyable film that kids are bound to love, whether it’s for the lovable robot characters or Astro Boy’s ‘cool’ powers.
