40 Days and Nights without Alcohol – Part 5

40 Days and Nights without Alcohol – Part 5

With the end in sight has Meghann Thorp been able to stay on the wagon?

Day 29 – How long is left?

It’s the start of week 5 and I’m being to wonder how much longer this will go on for. My early attitude of ‘each day is getting easier’ seems to have worn off quite rapidly. It appears that there is some confusion to the exact date lent finishes – Roman Catholics say Maundy Thursday whereas the traditionally  it’s Holy Saturday. After carrying out some research it’s apparent that Sundays are not included in the count, meaning I’ll actually be completing 45 days of abandoning alcohol. Oh the joy. I was completely unaware that throughout this chore Sundays are not included in the 40 days. It wouldn’t seem appropriate to have spent each Sunday getting drunk, even if it is meant to be a day of rest. Why didn’t somebody tell me this?

Day 30 – Hello Sheffield

I arrived at rainy Sheffield to meet my highly excited friend Amelia who turned 19 yesterday. Walking back to her student accommodation she warned me about the state of the kitchen. She was right. There were certainly traces of a party from the night before. If only somebody hadn’t eaten all of the cocktail sausages. What was most upsetting was that her chocolate cake had been thrown all over the floor – literally.

“I’ve got another one,” she said after looking at the reaction on my face. Amelia knew how much I loved birthday cake and this would have been the perfect antidote for not being able to drink.

“Why didn’t they just take the Smirnoff vodka?” I asked eyeing up the bottle that lay next to her birthday cards. Talking of alcohol, the Smirnoff should have been opened by now. I might have considered having a ‘day of rest’ if it was a Sunday.

Day 31 – Close call

Wow this was a close one. It seems like out of the past 30 days, this was the moment that I was inches away from breaking lent. After pouring out some of the vodka which lay on the worktop from yesterday I wanted to drown my sorrows following a lunch time bust up with Ben.

“Go on do it! Get drunk with me Tegg it’ll be fun,” Amelia said.

I couldn’t. It wasn’t worth throwing away 30 days of hard work and perseverance. Instead the lime cordial made an appearance and we headed off to a club called Plug in Sheffield. It’s quite upsetting to know that even sober the night still ends the same – sat on the windowsill of a local fast food outlet eating a portion of greasy chips coated in tomato sauce. Oh well, we all need a treat once in a while right?

Day 32 – Gas scare

Returning to Nottingham became a nightmare journey when a major gas leak delayed every single train service running through the station. Fantastic. What should have been a simple journey resulted in taking 4 hours. Yes Mr Trolley Man a small bottle of rose would be lovely if it wasn’t silly lent.

Day 33 – Shutter Island

You may have already caught onto the fact that over the past few weeks rather than test willpower frequently on a night out, going to the cinema is far easier. There’s nothing better than a good selection of pick and mix, a coke and a film. Okay so I might be substituting alcohol for a huge sugar rush here but my bank balance is definitely feeling the benefits.

Day 34 – Qualk Misery

It’s that time again in the newsroom where we have to get our heads around the extremely complicated design software Qualk. Considering that during the first two terms of university I’ve only had around 5 hours practice on the programme, the next assessment is going to be a nightmare.  After an extremely long afternoon trying to assemble some sort of professional page I call it a day and head back to Cotton Mills for a well deserved rest and a 4od catch up. 90210 is the perfect way to forget about the day that just passed.

Day 35 – Work first play later

Ten more days to go can you believe it? Who would have thought I’d get past week one let alone week five? And that’s without having every Sunday off. What a way to celebrate by spending the day in the library completing an essay. The sooner this gets done, the sooner I get to go home to Manchester and enjoy all the home comforts which my small university room just doesn’t have. A nice double bed, amazing food and the luxury of somebody doing your washing and ironing. This Easter break is going to be one of the best.
