Students praised at NTSU Awards

Alice Hallows is Volunteer of the Year 2010 and members from all areas of students’ union are praised at annual NTSU Awards.

Alice Hallows was awarded NTSU Volunteer of the Year at last night’s NTSU Awards. She ended up with a trio of awards having also been presented with the Clifton Outstanding Achievement Award and Initi8 Volunteer of the Year Clifton.

Alice said she was surprised to be congratulated so much for her contributions.

One of her biggest personal achievements was a hiking challenge with Initi8: “It was the Yorkshire Dales hike. It was really, really tough but I’m so proud of myself and the other people and all the support I got on that day to actually accomplish that.”

NTSU president, David Walker, also praised Alice: “She really is a fantastic example to every person that has doubts about students, that says students are wasters and they’re not here to make a difference. Students do make a difference and people like Alice Hallows genuinely make a difference, and I’m very pleased that she got the award that she did tonight.”

The awards ceremony was held in Byron House, with a packed audience of students, exec members and guests. Matt Proudfoot and Jaye Harrison hosted the evening, and had some well timed in-jokes for certain members of the audience.

Among the other award winners was Kieran Simpson, Fly FM station manager, who took home the City Outstanding Achievement Award. “A lot of efforts been put into Fly this year and this award just isn’t for me, to be fair – [it’s for] every single person that’s been involved in Fly this year,” he said.

Liana Basham also won the Initi8 Volunteer of the Year City. “I didn’t expect to win it, as I’m just a first year. I didn’t really know what I was doing at first but I’ve really enjoyed myself through the year,” said Liana. “It’s been a really valuable experience.”

A total of 23 awards were presented to students that evening. Jashan Patel and Liz McCluskey were jointly awarded RAG Volunteer of the Year, and Ellen Funston was named Stride Trainer of the Year, while the Hindu Society claimed Society of the Year. Leanne Hannabus was also praised for continuing the ethical and environmental efforts of her late friend, Carrie Maclaren, who was herself a Trent student and union volunteer.

A buffet was laid on for attendees during the interlude and there was entertainment from the Funky Fresh Collective and the Hindu Society.
