‘Graduating’ by the School Of Rock

‘Graduating’ by the School Of Rock

Many of you have just graduated and may be feeling a bit lost. That’s hardly unusual, so to put you at ease we asked a few of the stars for their advice. Graduate ANDREW TRENDELL got a lecture from a few of our learned friends…

Beverley Knight

What advice would give to students leaving University this year?

“It is a tough world out there at the moment. I don’t know how young people find the spirit and the energy, especially during this recession. I would say that no matter what that dream is, you have studied your arses off to achieve it, so you’ve got to keep at it and don’t let the slings and arrows of credit crunches and budgets or whatever hold you back. You have studied for all of those years to achieve something and to get on the career ladder so just go for it. Don’t give up and work at Maccy D’s. We need the young, talented and clever – WE NEED YOU GUYS!”

Jimmy Smith (Foals):

What advice would you give to people leaving university this year?

“Make sure you line up a job before you leave, it’s not as easy as you think out there. Just be clever about it, do some planning. If you want to make no money then form a band!”

Scroobius Pip

What advice would you give to people leaving University this year?

“Just try and excel in your field. I think that’s something we don’t highlight enough in the UK. It’s not all X Factor and getting excited about who can sing well. If you just aim to be the best you can be or the best in your area or field then that should hopefully translate into a comfortable living and enjoyably career. My own personal piece of advice from when I left Uni, is not to think about the insane amount of debt that you’re in now from ridiculous student loans. I think it’s outrageous that our youth can leave Uni in such debt. Don’t look at it as a real debt. It’s something that you can pay off very slowly and gradually. Just try and focus on improving yourself and bettering yourself in your chosen field.”

Jon ‘The Rev’ McClure (Reverend and The Makers)

What advice would you give to people leaving University this year?

“Don’t necessarily follow the vocation that people have laid out for you because you should go to University to get clever, rather than to get a job. Don’t go and work in solicitors and let that be the end of your life. Use your knowledge in a way that you like.”

Roy Stride (Scouting For Girls)

What advice would you give to those graduating?

“Do a Masters, do a PHD, do anything, just don’t get a fucking job! You’ll never become a fully grown person. McDonald’s is always recruiting. Join a band, do Uni again, just do what you love. Life’s too short.”

If graduates do anything this summer, what should it be?

“A really hot chick! Also, take your tent down to Newquay during the surfing time. Get onto a campsite, learn to surf, get a really wicked suntan, get into one of those festivals down there and just have a really wicked time.”
