As you all know our way of life and the lives of future students is under threat from cuts to our educational system. There is a risk that Lord Browne’s actions could result in the free market influencing higher/further education, potentially restricting universities to the rich ‘elite’ who would be able to afford the high tuition fees. If these changes go ahead as planned, university could no longer be about grades, but instead about how much money students have in their pockets. Nottingham Trent Students Union (NTSU), our student union, is not happy about this.
Phil Docherty, President of NTSU says: “We oppose Browne’s recommendation to remove the fee cap because they create an unfair university sector for applicants. Variable fees are a disaster waiting for happen. Students will pick courses not because they want to be on them, but because they are the best they think they can afford. And, the worst thing is that they do not know what they can afford, because there is no accurate predictor of future success.”
On November 10th 2010 students from all over Britain will be marching through the streets of London to protest against Lord Browne’s review. Platform, Trent TV and Fly FM will be there reporting on it every step of the way. If you would like to join the protest, head over to the Trent Student website for more information and to book your place.
To see what your fellow students think of the issue, read our Trent Voices feature in the magazine, out on Monday 8th November.
