It’s nothing new, but with the SingStar name this dance title has cred

Off the back of the rampant successes of Ubisoft’s Just Dance, it seems publishers are falling over themselves to get out a motion control dance game in time for the annual shopping season. SingStar Dance will be nothing new to those who’ve already waved their arms and shaken their hips in front of the TV. What does make it stand out from the rest is the significant clout the SingStar brands holds for the music industry and Sony’s continued network support.
Using PlayStation Move, SingStar Dance gives you the pleasure of strutting your stuff on the living room floor as you attempt to keep up with the dance as shown by the on-screen dancer. It’s clearer to see the dance chorography as, unlike Just Dance, the instructors aren’t flat silhouettes. Even so, the margin for error is unclear, and there’s no actual step-by-step walkthroughs – which Harmonix’ Dance Central offers. But who plays dance games to learn real chorography, anyway? Most of the time you’ll be freestyling.

This may be the start of a spin-off series for SingStar but it’s still a singing game. All of the game’s 30 tracks, which include music from MC Hammer, The Pussycat Dolls, La Roux, Ricky Martin and Lady Gaga, can be sung or danced to. Two mics and two Move controllers can also be used to get four of you singing and dancing as one.
There’s no denying that SingStar Dance is a ‘me, too’ title, but it’s one that’s got the quality of the SingStar brand, and the support that goes with it, behind it. And if you’re looking for real innovation, just wait until you see all the hilarious performance uploads to the online community. Now, there’s something you won’t get in Just Dance.
