Singles Round-Up 17.12.10

Tron-loving, skinny jean-sceptic AARON LEE grabs his light cycle and powers up to chase down this week’s choice tracks from the Grid and beyond.

Eliza Doolittle – Skinny Genes
Released: 26/12/2010

I’ve never been one for guys wearing skinny jeans. And at last here’s an artist who agrees. I’m must confess, Miss Doolittle and her honeysuckle voice were unknown to me until quite recently. This is a re-release, but ‘Skinny Genes’ brings the best of spring back this winter. The catchy tune and playful lyrics about skinny jeans getting in the way of intimate pleasure are beautifully bubbly. Almost like Lily Allen in her softer ego, Doolittle is easy listening. Who knew skinny jeans had such a naughty effect on women? Maybe I should reconsider?

Eva Cassidy – Silent Night
Released: 13/12/2010

Here’s a single where you know exactly what you’re getting. Eva Cassidy’s gentle voice suits this classic hymn well. Singing along to the sound of her acoustic guitar, Cassidy’s interpretation of ‘Silent Night’ brings back many a memory of school choirs and Nativity plays. Nothing you haven’t heard before, but a nice alternative if you can’t find your copy of ‘All-Time Greatest Christmas Songs’.

Daft Punk – Derezzed
Released: 20/12/2010

The cyborg DJs from the future are back with another electro pop head-thumper. Part of the soundtrack the duo have produced specially for Torn: Legacy, ‘Derezzed’ is like something straight from the Blade Runner cyber trend at the height of its popularity. A continuous crest of synth and pounding percussion that’s like an alarm call to action. If house and dance is your thing, get your UV gear out and execute: ctrl+shift+rave.

Tinie Tempah feat Kelly Rowland – Invincible
Released: 26/12/2010

Why ruin a good thing? Now, I’m no A&R man, but surely the obvious choice for the forth single from the Plumstead rapper’s debut album would be the excellent ‘Wonderman’? Not only is it unusually catchy, but it features some absorbing vocals from Ellie Goulding that leaves it somewhere between a greasy junkyard and sensual spa. ‘Invincible’, on the other hand, is more like all that was left after a fire broke out in the love ballads production factory. Tinie isn’t at his most convincing lyrically, and Rowland’s throaty cries make this sound like a forced blind date.
