Review: Seahaven, Ghost

After originally been released on Creator Destructor last year, LA’s Seahaven debut release Ghost is soon to be re-released on up and coming pop punk label Run For Cover, and the album shows all the signs of being the formative release of a great band.

Seahaven formed in 2009 from the ashes of melodic hardcore band Final Fight, and meld the styles of Crime In Stereo and Devil And God era Brand New, coming together to create an interesting blend that is instantly accessible to both fans of pop punk and those with more indie sensibilities.

Album opener ‘Plague’ begins with a gentle rhythmic progression before opening up with unrelenting gruff vocals that would make any self respecting Hot Water Music fan very happy indeed. It’s easy to see Seahaven’s influence, and they wear this proudly on their sleeves, however the band also offer something intriguing to the listener – they have an atmosphere around them that screams “listen to me!”

On ‘Bottled’, a tale of a broken home, there are some pretty cliche lyrics at play but that’s perfectly fine as the entire song chugs along in similar fashion to all those great bands from the earlier part of the last decade. When we get to the penultimate track ‘Love’ – which features Jordan Brown of New Found Glory fame – it seems the band have found their own sound snugly between the worlds of punk rock and indiemo.

Yes sure, the band don’t hide their influences throughout the entirety of this thirty minute EP, but it works and there’s a lot going on here for you get your teeth deep into. All in all Ghost is one of the best EP’s from 2010 and I would urge you to pick up the re-release on Run For Cover later this year.
