Andy ‘Midge’ Schulten has been elected as NTSU president for the coming academic year.
Schulten, current VP sports, won 1759 of the 2946 votes in the first round of voting.
Other presidential candidates included Neil Aaron (810), Dan Eve (227) and Stephen Miller (89).
A record 4864 votes were cast in total this year. That’s 138 more than last year.
Following the announcement, Schulten spoke to Kieran Simpson on Fly FM:
“It wasn’t in my manifesto, but my main aim is to keep the Students Union stable.
“I remember [at the handover meeting last year] the first thing we discussed was the financial situation. So I’ll be trying to make sure that we’re still secure for future years.
“It’s a very exciting time for Trent students.”
Schulten said he was nervous earlier in the week, as support for Aaron seemed strong.
“But my campaigners were secretly out there hitting Facebook and talking to people in halls after lectures,” he said.
“When I went to Ocean on Wednesday, I had a massive confidence boost when all my sports teams said they voted for me.”
Earlier in the week, Fly FM presenter Hannah Lupton asked Schulten about the possible sports skew in his manifesto:
“I wanted to challenge myself. I could have just gone for sport again.
“My manifesto has got a couple of points about sport, like making Clifton into a sports bar on the weekend, also I mentioned Freshers week.
“This year we’ve got the same Freshers’ week as Nottingham Uni. So I just want to make sure the whole of Freshers week 2011 runs smooth. And that includes making sure all the societies and sports clubs maximise their membership numbers.”
The election results were announced in Byron House sport hall, where current VP democracy Scott Donoghue and VP student services Louise O’Keeffe spoke to the assembled crowd of campaign teams and partying students.
This year had a record 47 candidates for the 10 elected positions.
