Review: Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters

They’ve pulled Tiger from the cover of his own game. Is the rest of this package just as impersonal?

In a series revelation, for the first time ever, players can now set foot on the Augusta National course to experience the rich history of The Masters and what it means to challenge the best golfers in the world for the coveted Green Jacket.

Players will initially set their sights on the PGA tour, embarking on ‘Road to the Masters’ where they’ll endure Q school, the Nationwide tour and finally the PGA tour. This can be achieved by mastering the 14 championship courses. Now you might think winning the Green Jacket is the ultimate achievement in this game. But you’d be wrong. Your caddie poses a bigger challenge. He will fire constant advice at you, which is invaluable at the start and can prove to be game-winning for newcomers. But after a while it becomes annoying and derogatory, which is why the developers must have added a ‘disable caddie’ option – and let me tell you, there’s nothing like silence on the green.

Speaking of greens, if you’re a little rusty (not your clubs, your skills), you can train on the five mini-golf courses, which offer a new fun way of perfecting your putting. Or you can opt for a round on quick play which does what it says on the tin. And all this practice will eventually pay off. Both in the sense of winning, but also your XP increases through achieving course objectives, meaning you become a better all-round golfer. You can also purchase new equipment; pity you can’t buy a muzzle for that caddie of yours. As you progress up the ranks, you’ll start to attract fans, interest and sponsorship deals will come your way, meaning your profile and wallet size both increase.

If you’re not a fan of golf, but of gaming, then either way the visuals will satisfy. The cacophony of rich colour and sublime graphics comes with a downside however, as it’s reflective in the sheer number of loading screens – after looking in the mirror I actually think I look physically older.

Aside from that annoying caddie I spoke of, the likes of David Feherty and Jim Nantz provide more than adequate commentary throughout the game, adding both depth and style. One of my main quibbles about this game is its repetitiveness which can be major turn off for many newcomers or non-golf fans alike. However, I urge you to give this game a chance as the gameplay is certainly player friendly.

Who else is hoping that when Tiger Woods “talks” to Bubba Watson he asks Bubba to show him his Green Jacket collection? http://bit.ly/iQWopV
