Freshers: The Sound of Freshers Week 2011

Freshers: The Sound of Freshers Week 2011

Nine nights, seven venues, and the playlist to the best week of your life. Platform has caught up with the DJ’s who will play at Trent’s biggest nights out. We wanted to give you the low-down on what to expect and introduce you to some of the brand new tunes you won’t be able to get out of your head. This is the soundtrack to Fresher’s Week 2011 and we think it sounds absolutely amazing…

Jason Molloy, aka DJ Little Man,  is a main room DJ at Oceana on a Mondays and Tuesdays, and plays a mash up of big Electro, House, Dubstep, DnB and Indie anthems:

Platform: Why Oceana DJ Little Man?

DJ Little Man

DJ Little Man: Oceana stands out from the crowd because of the amount of rooms it has, and the variety of music that’s played. The smaller rooms are dedicated to one genre, and then it all comes together in the main room, which plays everything you could ever ask for. There’s even a VIP chill out room if you just want to get away from it all for a bit!

P: What are your tracks to get the students going on a night out?

DJ LM: I’m playing all the big student anthems- everything from Mr. Brightside to Insomnia by Faithless!

P: What songs should the freshers be downloading and playing over the next few weeks?

DJ LM: The big tracks I’d keep an ear out for are the electro remixes. They make Oceana stand out from the crowd and send the dancefloor mental.

P: What song is going to define Freshers Week 2011?

DJ LM: This is a tough one, but i’d say Stay Awake by Example. Who will stay awake for the longest?

P: If you were to place money on an artist to become massive this year, who would it be?

DJ LM: Without a doubt Ed Sheeran, but watch out for the big electro DJ’s taking over with tracks from DJ chuckie, Laidback Luke and Avicci.

P: Is this the best freshers week so far, in terms of the music you get to play?

DJ LM: There’s so many euphoric tunes out there at the moment. With Dubstep still at large, it’s set to be the messiest Freshers’ Week so far!

DJ Rudey entertains the main room at Gatecrasher every Saturday, playing house music to the one of Nottingham’s biggest clubs:

Platform: Whats so good about where you DJ?

DJ Rudey: The main room in Gatecrasher is set out over three levels, so there’s plenty of space to dance! I’ve played lots of venues around Europe and America and I can’t find an atmosphere that beats Gatecrasher when it goes off!

P: What are your favourite floorfillers ?

DJ Rudey: The ultimate floorfiller has to be Robyn S, ‘Show Me Love’. The original is good, but the remix with Swedish House Mafia and Laidback Luke is even better! My favourite version though is by Annger Dimas. A great producer and definitely one to watch!

P: What songs should people listen out for?

DJ Rudey: It’s hard to choose songs because the electronic music world moves so fast.  Avicci’s ‘Levels’ was huge in Ibiza this summer, so no doubt it’ll be huge for Freshers’.  You might know Avicci from Leona Lewis’ new track ‘Collide’.

P: What songs do you reckon will define Fresher’s Week 2011?

DJ Rudey:  I would say ‘Work’. It’s a cheeky little bootleg track I have, a little reminder every 32 beats that it’s not all party, party, party at uni!

P: Are there any artist’s you’re tipping to be huge by the end of the year?

DJ Rudey: A producer trio called ‘The Futuristic Polar Bears’. The recently did a cover of Paul Oakenfields’ ‘Southern Sun’ and I feel with myself and Jamie-Lee Wilson, an amazing singer/songwriter from Australia, 2012 will definitely be their year.

P: Musically, is this the best Fresher’s week yet?

DJ Rudey: Absolutely. 100%. It’s an epic start to the year and it’s only going to get bigger and better!

Gazz Snowden, is a DJ at the Leeds Festival Lock-up Stage, and is a resident DJ at Rock City. Together with Rob Upton they are the Hey! Hey! Hey! DJ’s, every Saturday night at Rock City:

Platform: What is Rock City? Go!

Gazz Snowden: Rock city probably has the biggest dancefloor in Nottingham and when it’s at full capacity the atmosphere is incredible! Oh, and we also have a massive sound system and an awesome lightshow!

Rob Upton: It’s the world famous Rock City! It’s a family, it’s the history, it’s 2000 people getting messy every week!

P: What tracks are truly becoming crowd favourites?

GS: DJ Fresh, ‘Louder’, has been immensely popular this summer. So expect that along with; ‘Why You Kiss Me’ by Example and Nero’s ‘Guilt’. As well as the new anthems I’ll be playing classics such as ‘Chelsea Dagger’, ‘Buck Rodgers’ and all the other student Indie anthems.

RU: Anything that makes the crowd sing louder than the sound system, or anything with enough bass to rip my beard off! Expect Paramore, AC/DC, Arctic Monkeys, Skrillex, Katy B, and everything else in between!

P: What tracks should be a definite buy for the Freshers?

GS: The new stuff by Chase and Status and Nero is really smashing the dancefloor, along with Ed Sheeran’s The A Team as an end of night sing-along.

RU: Songs from the new Blink 182 Album. It’s going to split fans right down the middle and we can’t make up our mind about it!

P: What are the tracks that will remind students of Freshers Week 2011?

GS: DJ Fresh- Louder. It’s been the sound of the summer so far!

RU: Queen’s ‘Don’t Stop Me Now’. If there ever was a song to keep you going until 3am, or get you to your 9am lecture after a heavy one, this is it!

P: What artist has got the best chance of claiming 2011/12 as their own?

GS: Well obviously Ed Sheeran and Rizzle Kicks have really made their mark this year and they will only get better as the year goes on. Look out for You Me at Six and Kids in Glass Houses though, rock music is fighting back!

RU: If the Hey! Hey! Hey! Dj’s had it their way, bands like Four Year Strong and A Day to Remember would be household names by now. We’re still waiting for a hundred Ed Sheeran wannabes to come out the woodwork!

P: Do you rate the sound of Freshers week 2011?

GS: Yeah! There’s so much great music out there. The music scene is so fresh at the moment and unlike anything we’ve ever seen before. Everything from pop, metal, drum and bass to dubstep is definitely making its mark. There really is something for everyone at the moment.

RU: Rock City’s playing a massive part in Fresher’s Week this year, so definitely! Come and introduce yourselves and let us know what you want to hear!

P: Thanks guys!

From all the writers and editors at Platform, we really wish that we were still Freshers! We can still remember the songs that were played during our first week at Nottingham Trent and it made our year.  This week is going to go down in Nottingham history!
