The ‘Occupy Wall St’ protests in New York have gained worldwide recognition and influenced protesters to take a stance in various cities all over the world, to voice opinions on matters regarding the domination and corporate greed that is common with the world’s largest financial organisations. Altogether hundreds of thousands have gathered to take part in demonstrations and camping outside famous landmarks across the globe stretching as far as Pakistan and Australia.
St. Paul’s Cathedral is the hotspot for ‘Occupy London’ protesters. Police have urged the activists to remove the two hundred and fifty tents which protesters have been camping outside the building since the 15th October. However the protesters have plans to stay until Christmas and it seems they have prepared for their long term-stay with a kitchen a library and a ‘tech-tent’ which they have set up. They are refusing to remove until the City of London Corporation meet the list of demands they have proposed.
‘Occupy Nottingham’ has also risen with the inspiration of the movement across cities worldwide spurring on it’s emergence. Many protesters have been camping in Market Square since the 15th October which includes our very own Nottingham Trent University students.
Unlike London, the activists in Nottingham have been offered support by the police, which comes as a surprise as there has been violent incidents between the police and protesters, though it is clear that this is a peaceful protest across the globe.
The worldwide activists are fighting for economic and political solidarity that is prohibited by the forces of capitalism. They hope to bring a global transformation through their peaceful protests, however there are different responses to the movement but it appears to be mentioned less in the media, which decreases its level of importance, which would mean finding an alternative approach to gain mass media attention.
