Last night turned out to be a fantastic one for Fly FM with them picking up three Student Radio Awards at London’s O2 arena.
Student radio has helped to launch the careers of DJ’s such as Scott Mills, Simon Mayo and Alex Zane. It now appears that Fly FM has its own stars in the making.
The station was nominated for eight SRA’s, and managed to win a Gold, Silver and Bronze award on the night.
Best Male Gold went to Pete Allison, who currently has a weekend show on ‘The Hits’ radio. Best Female Silver went to Jade Worsley, and Best Entertainment Bronze went to Pete and Pearsé.
Fly FM’s station manager, Matt Geer has only been in the role since the start of the year and is delighted with their recent success.
He said: “I was proud even before we got the awards, to even get nominated for eight of them is amazing.
“When you compare us to other universities we have done so well to get so much out of so little.
“The doors have been opened for people like Pete and Jade and it’s up to them to go through them.”
Fly FM is continuing to look to future to be the best it can be with more emphasis on getting a wider variety of shows.
The recent decision to close down the Student Union at Byron House didn’t help the station in their quest for success.
It meant that Fly had to move into new studios on Alfreton Road, however Matt believes things are going well.
He said: “It’s been a bit of a hassle this year, especially at the start. But now everyone is settling down things are working out better.
“We need to respect it for what it is, we are in the heart of the city surrounded by students – it’s brilliant.”
Everyone here at Platform congratulates Fly FM on their success and hope that there is even more to come in the future.
