Versace for H&M 2011 Collection Review

Versace for H&M 2011 Collection Review

The newest in a stream of designer collaborations at H&M has finally launched too much excitement! Versace for H&M draws heavily on Versace’s heritage prints and the extrovert style that made it famous. None of the items are for the faint hearted, featuring looks including tassels, studs, leather, sequins, cut outs and wild prints. The collection mixes aspects not only from the main Versace collections and archives but also from Versus; the younger and lower priced diffusion range designed by Christopher Kane. While the items are priced far higher than the average H&M product, they are not much more expensive than a dress from Topshop, making it worth the commotion. Overall it is a visually stunning collection, even if you‘re not brave enough to wear it!

Since it was first launched in New York, this collection has been creating a media frenzy. With a star-studded catwalk including Abbey Lee Kershaw and Lindsey Wixson, and performances from Nicki Minaj and Prince, it looked like a night to remember. Starting with a giant paper bag that seems to be famous in its own right, appearing in London and other major cities, the fashion world was full of anticipation before Donatella Versace even stepped into the Regent Street store. On the morning of the launch the first five lucky customers in the queue got to meet Donatella before being whisked in for their allotted 15 minute shopping time.

Versace for H&M predictably sold out on the day. Some very dedicated fans tried to avoid missing out by camping outside stores before the launch and on the day a 400 strong queue snaked around Regent St. The good news is that the website is now restocked and selling most of the items again, but this will undoubtedly not last long so grab it while you can!

H&M collaborations are always very popular as they have the signature designer styles that people crave. They also seem to appear at the perfect moment! Versace itself has been seeing a huge resurgence in popularity since Lady Gaga wore vintage items in her ‘Edge of Glory’ video, making this the ideal time to give people the chance to own this style. On January 19th Versace will launch a smaller ‘cruise’ line for H&M, so get ready to do some early summer holiday shopping!
