For many years Topshop has been cementing its position as a fashion leader, not only in London but on an international scale. Through designer collaborations, the launch of its Unique line and its creative use of digital media, it has placed itself right in the centre of the fashion universe. This year Topshop celebrates 10 years of supporting emerging British designers through the NEWGEN scheme. With alumni including Mary Katrantzou, Erdem and Christopher Kane to name a few, the schemes success is obvious. Providing new designers with support towards costs and the opportunity of show space, the scheme has been vital to London’s reputation as an innovative scene.
For the 10th anniversary 20 previous NEWGEN recipients have designed a tshirt in their signature style, to be sold in stores and online during London Fashion Week. Priced at £30 they are a great way to own a piece from the designer you could never afford, and with proceeds going to the Centrepoint charity there is no reason to feel guilty! The only problem is too much choice, with so many great designs hours can be spent debating between a lace collared Erdem tshirt, or an Ashish tshirt printed with sequins!
As part of the celebrations they have also collaborated with Nick Knight and his ongoing SHOWstudio project to create a short film showcasing some amazing pieces from designer collaborations with Topshop. Starring the beautiful Karlie Kloss, it is 3 and a half minutes of brilliance, truly showing the breadth of designer styles Topshop has brought to the high street. Watching this video it is hard not to see why London is known for its emerging talent, with revolutionary use of colour and print, and a constant stream of new ideas. With a pledge to continue its support for another 10 years, Topshop looks set to keep presenting us with the names to watch!
