Well, he’s actually at home now. Matt Wallace, our own Ex-NTSU President has finally finished his six month walk last week which took him over 1,500 miles around the UK and has raised both money and awareness for charity Cancer Research UK.
Last year on September 24th 2011, which was also his 30th birthday, Matt Wallace decided to pack his bags, give up his job and hand his flat keys in and take to the streets of Great Britain in order to raise money and awareness for Cancer charity, Cancer Research UK. He set up on his charity quest by walking the length and breadth of the UK, whilst promoting the life saving work that takes place at each of the Cancer research Centre of Excellence sites. He wanted to raise money for Cancer Research UK as part of his ‘Where’s Wallace’ project which saw him set off from John O’Groats last year and finally finish this March at Lands End.
At each centre that he visited, he met and filmed the men and women that work there; the people that are involved in the scientific research that Cancer Research UK funds and then along the way he shared his trip across various different social networking sites including Facebook and Twitter. Wallace didn’t realize the extent of this project and how big it would eventually become. He has now after 6 months raised in excess of £20,000 which is a staggering amount and one which will both help and change the many lives of people who are affected in various different ways by cancer.
Matt was inspired to do this mammoth challenge after losing a close family friend to cancer back in 2006 and since then has made it his priority throughout this project to find out more about cancer, to find out about prevention and causes and see the work that goes on in each of these Centre’s of Excellence across the UK.
His journey looked like this;
Leg 1 – John O’Groats to Dundee
Leg 2 – Dundee to Glasgow
Leg 3 – Glasgow to Edinburgh
Leg 4 – Edinburgh to Newcastle
Leg 5 – Newcastle to Leeds
Leg 6 – Leeds to Manchester
