Nottingham Trent Students’ Union President Jonny Ellison has expressed his delight with the new Exec Committee elected for next year, after the biggest Exec Elections in the SU’s history came to an end last night.
As Jonny had predicted to Platform two weeks ago, this year’s elections broke the record for voting turnout, with 26% of the NTU population casting their votes online.
Platform Magazine’s News Editor Simon Paice caught up with Jonny at the end of Results Night at Ocean to reflect on the evening and the new Exec committee.
“I’m feeling relieved, but mainly happy for the candidates that have been elected,” said Ellison. “Attendance was good tonight, there was no ill behaviour between people and it went smoothly. Plus with Trent Media doing a great job covering it, it’s been a good night.”
Ellison went on to praise the new Exec, which consists of Jo Southwell-Sander (President), Katie Wright (Welfare), Libby Farrier-Williams (Education), Paddy Atkinson (Sport), Marcus Boswell (Services), Liz McCluskey (Activities), Costa Charalambous (City Liaison) and Chantelle Farr (Clifton Liaison).
He commented: “They’ve done a fantastic job campaigning over the past two weeks, they’ve been out speaking to a lot of students and I think they’re going to do a really great job next year. We’ve got a really good Exec team going into the new SU building, so I’m delighted.”
The evening also gave the current President a chance to start reflecting on his own time in office.
“It’s a little bit emotional, it’s been a good journey and I’ve had a good innings,” he added. “It’s been a fantastic experience but it’s time to move on. In two months’ time they’ll be taking over the reins and they’re going to do a fantastic job.”
