Trent’s men’s football team followed in the footsteps of their female counterparts by beating the University of Nottingham at Meadow Lane last night.
A great battling performance from back to front saw Trent to a reasonably comfortable win and in the process restored some pride in the overall Varsity series.
Platform’s man of the match and Trent’s rock at the back Nathan Stainfield was delighted with how Trent dug the victory out.
He said: “The pitch wasn’t the best so we knew it would be a battle and we wanted it more tonight.
“They can play these Uni of boys but I think we chose the right way to play, to do the ugly things early on and then we proved later on that we can do the pretty stuff too,” he added.
It’s been an up and down season for Trent, after they started poorly in the league, but the BUCS cup win and now this brilliant Varsity win make it a successful year.
Stainfield added: “The league’s been a disappointment this year but we won the BUCS and to beat the Uni of is always sweet – and getting man of the match is always nice too!”
Assistant Manager of the victorious Trent side David Bentley was pleased with how well his side stuck to their plans.
“We played well but tactically we were spot on. It was perfect. We made a change after ten minutes from pressing high up the pitch to a low press and it worked – they never really created anything,” he said.
“We knew it would be hard but after winning the cup we were confident coming in,” he added – but is it their best result of the season?
“5-1 in the cup was a great one off result but as a team and as a uni this is certainly on a par.”
