This week saw the start of the Royal Ascot, which can only mean horses, royalty and lots of fashion. Yes, the racing is important but let’s not forget how equally important the fashion side of the event has become over the years. As usual the dress code for the event is formal and over the years we have seen some incredible style choices, in particular in the millinery department. Here are some of the more extravagant headpieces from day one of the event.

As lovely as the fascinator on the right is, let’s not pretend that it isn’t completely overshadowed by the flamboyance of the giant butterfly on the left. They do say fashion is all about taking risks.
Slightly more subtle in comparison, the bright yellow reflects the summer weather and the contrasting black keeps the hat interesting.
