After a tremendous victory in the ice hockey last night NTU went into the day with a 6-3 series deficit to overturn. With three points up for grabs, today could have been the day that Trent tied the series. Unfortunately It didn’t go quite to plan.
Friday kicked off with the women’s hockey but the Trent ladies came up against strong, formidable opposition. By half time UoN were up 3-0 and looking in cruise control.
All hopes of a second half comeback were quashed after two goals in quick succession killed off any real threat NTU posed. UoN finished the game 7-0 victors.
The men’s affair however was a whole lot tighter. In a back and forth game Trent had a shot cleared off the line before UoN countered and scored. Uni Of went in at half time 1-0 and scored soon after the break with a low drive from the edge of the area to make it 2-0.
Trent continued to battle and towards the end of the match pulled a goal back through Procter before Trent equalised with little left in the game.
Ultimately though there was heartbreak for the boys in pink after UoN captain Johnny Ruiz scored the winner very late into the game, capitalising on a rebound. UoN sneaking a very enjoyable match 3-2
The Men won’t have to wait till next varsity to get their revenge. The two teams will play each other in the BUCS premier division next year.
There was something for NTU to cheer today though; the women’s netball team winning 49-40 at a hostile Jubilee Campus.
UoN left the court 13-11 up after the first period but a resurgent Trent side blew away the girls from Uni Of in the second period.
NTU started the second half 27-19 up and never looked back, cruising into the start of the final period 40- 29 up. Despite shipping 11 goals in the last period NTU secured a varsity point and hopefully a little moumentum going into next week.
That’s three years on the trot that NTU women have won the netball and it means that the series is 8-4 going into the football on Monday.
