Tuesday 28th was Lacrosse’s turn in the Nottingham Varsity Series, in the fourth event of the series. Women’s Lacrosse unfortunately fell to Uni Of, 21-0, whilst NTU’s Men pulled off a closely fought 11-8 win.
Going into the game it was a tale of two squads from NTU, the sport is growing at NTU, however this season has seen some growing pains; Women’s Lacrosse are coming off a tough season, finishing second from bottom, whereas the Men’s Lacrosse are enjoying a very fruitful season, finishing second from top.
The challenge for NTU Women’s Lacrosse was steep, with a hard season prior and UoN playing well in the league above them, the cards were stacked.
Regardless, Trent put out a very strong effort, however UoN’s experience in the higher league showed and our Women weren’t able to put a shot past their goalie. NTU Women’s finished the game in a 21-0 loss to University.
Men’s Lacrosse finished above Uni Of in the league this season, and they looked to outdo them again in varsity.
Although Trent were confident going into the match, it didn’t stop UoN coming out strong and challenging NTU’s Men. Scoring early on it looked as if UoN could upset NTU for a Lacrosse double, however two goals in quick succession saw Trent take the lead of the match. A goal apiece after taking the lead saw NTU take the first quarter 3-2.
UoN looked tenacious and could sniff danger, keeping in close quarters with Trent. The score line kept increasing for both teams, in the end it was UoN who took the second quarter, and went in at half time 6-5 up.
The score line kept close throughout the whole of the third quarter, however Trent were able to regain the match, taking the score line to 8-7 at the end of the third.
Going into the final quarter, although the score line favoured Trent, there were high stakes as the match had swung in the quarters before. Fortunately Trent were able to hold their nerve and come away with the match, scoring another 3 times, winning the match 11-8. A tough match but a well fought victory to the boys in Pink.
With that win, the overall standings were 4-3 to University of Nottingham, Trent behind, but still all to play for with Super Wednesday and Ice Hockey to come.
